TAIIA is an experiment hosted at the joint imagery formation and interpretation center in the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DRM), which aims to build a tailored automatic activity detection tool on chosen sites of interest.
Each day experts from Preligens, the DGA (France’s Defence Procurement and Technology Agency), and DRM Imagery Intelligence specialists meet. We have set up the experiment platform that is fed operational images captured by the new CSO constellation, France’s High Resolution Reconnaissance Satellites.The artificial intelligence algorithms enable the detection, recognition and identification of objects such as planes, boats and vehicles on a constantly increasing volume of images. Not only does this technology help experts in their search for information and clues on images, but it also enables them to improve the analysis of activity on pre-selected sites of geographical interest.
They are now free from the most time-consuming and tedious tasks, to focus their expertise on the most added-value ones.
The gain brought by Artificial Intelligence will also enable an evolution in our daily activities, in which a larger part will be dedicated to analysing the data. Thanks to Preligens AI, the analyst is warned of the evolution of activity on a site of strategic interest, notably through alert notifications, where rules have previously been defined by the analyst themselves. The TAIIA experiment is not a simple technology acquisition, but truly helps us to understand this evolution.
The initial results obtained have convinced us, along with the DGA, to continue with the experiment. In the longer run, the goal is to offer this technological capability to all Imagery Intelligence users. Until then, we will progressively onboard other Ministry entities to the experiment. As it stands the operational gains have already been identified. Thanks to the impressive number of images analysed, we are now able to identify fleeting activities, or even behaviors we were previously unaware of, such as the presence of a drone on a platform where it had never been observed before. The ability to set up alerts that are customisable also enables us to shorten the tempo of intelligence.
