The [artificial] intelligence newsletter
Roberta by Preligens
We are both passionate about artificial intelligence (AI) and with our team, we have been working for more than five years to support our clients in the very demanding Defense industry. As the stakes of technological excellence and information superiority are paramount for national sovereignty, we have to perfectly master the state of the art in scientific research in AI while actively contributing to it.
To share our passion with you, we are launching this monthly newsletter named Roberta, as a tribute to Roberta Wohlstetter, a pioneer of modern intelligence. In this first issue, a podcast uncovers her career and the major role she has played in History.
We will also write about those who inspire us, and we will decipher concrete cases of application and technical concepts of AI.
Our goal: give you the keys to better understand AI and create together tomorrow’s world, a safer and better place for all.

Enjoy your reading,

Le Mayflower, un trimaran autonome traverse l’Atlantique
Autonomous 'Mayflower' to cross the Atlantic
The vessel will be the first full-sized craft to cross the Atlantic autonomously, relying on artificial intelligence, robotics and clever computer work to cross 3,000 miles of ocean — without a sailor on board.

China Targets AI, Chips Among Seven Battlefronts in Tech Race With U.S.
China upped the stakes in its tech race with the U.S. as leaders laid out plans to speed up development of advanced technologies from chips to artificial intelligence and quantum computing over five years.

Multi sources data analysis to localize planes
Syria Canal, May 18th 2020. Two Mig-29 took off from the Russian-controlled military base of Latakia in Syria.

How to use AI to localize these planes ?
Where are the Mig-29 ?

Ground truth
An algorithm, in order to be able to learn repetitive tasks and perform well, needs labeled images that constitute ground truth.
To create autonomous robots on Mars and guide them with AI, American scientists need ground truth. They use the photos taken by Curiosity, build a database of images on which the different soils are cut out and annotated: sand, earth, bedrock or large rocks.
From this ground truth, the scientists train the AI model that learns to detect the different soils of Mars and to guide the robots.

Three questions to Olivier Ezratty

You have just published the fourth edition of your ebook “The usages of Artificial Intelligence”. According to you, what are the most important changes that have happened since the first edition in 2017, and what is your analysis on this evolution?
Companies have moved from the discovery stage to the adoption of artificial intelligence tools. This technology is now being used in all sectors of activity to the point where it is becoming commonplace and is gradually losing its magic touch. There is a lot of feedback, and some of it has been very difficult. AI technologies have also progressed well, benefiting in particular from advances in the power of specialized processors for deep learning, both on the server side and on the embedded or smartphone market. Language and image processing is working much better than it did 4 years ago. Companies are also learning how to better manage their data and limit the effects of data bias. Other areas have made less progress such as robotics. It was also realized that much of the predictions about the impact of AI on employment were far too pessimistic.
Podcast
"December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy!" exclaimed President Roosevelt after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Two battleships at the bottom of the sea, 2400 Americans killed or missing, the entry of the United States into the Second World War, and, for the young Roberta Wohlstetter, a painful mystery: why couldn’t the signals of such a catastrophe have been anticipated? How could Intelligence be better prepared and thought through after World War II?
