“Artificial intelligence: the EU needs to act as a global standard-setter” by the European Parliament

Parliament’s Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age (AIDA) adopted its final recommendations, concluding 18 months of inquiries.

The adopted text says that the public debate on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) should focus on this technology’s enormous potential to complement humans.

How can we ensure that the technologies developed, particularly in artificial intelligence, are ethical?

Today, many regulations are being discussed, particularly at European Union level with the AI Act and the Data Governance Act. It is exciting to see that more and more attention is being paid to the opportunities and limits of AI, while allowing innovations to develop in a safe environment. The introduction of concepts such as "data altruism" or "responsible AI" also helps to shed light on alternative approaches with a high social impact.

A word of vocabulary

In machine learning, it is about encoding elements and data according to their properties to facilitate their use and transformation in different spaces. In AI, the vector is a practical way to organize data and automate its processing to build an algorithm. One of the very first steps in creating a machine learning model is to vectorize the data.

In a more graphic sense, so-called vector images are composed of elements (points, lines, segments) that are defined and linked together by mathematical formulas. Thus, the vector elements of the image can be modified, transposed and worked on according to a system of proportionality and coordinates.
